“Three Ring Circus” (and two brooches) is one of several miniature installations/stories I’ve made over the years. It uses children’s toys – the Poll Parrot “cricket”– and the bareback dancer’s umbrella (a child’s kitchen utensil) and recycled tins – the dappled horse and the tiger leaping through fire – are some of the media used for this piece.
I wanted to try to capture the energy and spontaneity as well as the down-at-the-heels, overworn look of a circus. The dancing dog spins on top of a worn bottle cap – his ring hides in the platform; the bareback rider’s legs swing, and her parasol twirls – she’s a brooch. The horse beneath her is a brooch as well. The tiger’s ring turns down and becomes a ring with the tiger sitting on top.
