The Queen in this piece was formed from the top of a French candy tin; I put her in a prison with a gate using the same form. When the gate is opened, the queen's hand swings down, offering a ruby to pay for her escape. The ladies in waiting on either side of the queen have their individual symbols on the backs of the pieces. The box clasp is a repeat of the queen's prison. The piece incorporates silver, copper, found tins, ruby, and patinas.
When I begin to think about a project, I don’t think, “Now where can I put recycled items?” What really happens is that when I find an old tin, or photograph, or series of photos or oddities, I don’t usually have a project in mind; I just like the look of the item. In the case of the queen’s face on the candy tin that I found in France, I just thought it was a nice image. That tin was in my studio for years. Then, when I was making a necklace with a heart-shaped box clasp, the queen’s face came to mind. Because she looks medieval, I put her in a prison cell, and put her ladies in waiting with her on the necklace. The Queen of Hearts’ sad story was completed with the heart-shaped cell door and her hand with its offered ruby.
